Behavioural Grooming
Regular grooming is essential for your pet's overall health, but when challenges arise, it can be a stressful experience for both pet and pet parent. Behavioural Grooming is a specialised approach that addresses the unique challenges faced by both the animal and the groomer, helping the pet overcome fears, physical limitations, and other hurdles.
While it's understandable that some groomers may turn away clients for their own safety, and the safety of the animal, we are committed to working with dogs that require specialised Behavioural Grooming care. In the very rare event that we cannot handle your pet, maintaining their safety and our own, we will inform you and suggest alternative training solutions first.
Puppy Grooms
Puppy grooms are so important!
It is highly recommended that puppies start visting the groomer from a young age so they can get used to the process slowly and in stages, making it less stressful and daunting when they are older.
Puppies aren’t born knowing how to be groomed, so just like leaning how to sit and stay, they need guidance and training to learn how to behave safely and be ok with grooming. There are so many new and strange sounds, sensations and smells that your dog will experience at the groomers, so it’s important to familiarise and assimilate your pup to this process from a young age. At Zen Dog Grooming our behavioural focussed approach means that everything is introduced calmly and mindfully at your pup’s pace. Your puppy has a whole lifetime of grooming ahead of them so you want this essential process to be as pleasant and positive as possible so they can always be comfortable during grooming.
For the safety of your puppy and the other dogs who visit, we recommend that puppies wait until they have completed all their immunisations before having their first groom.
Ideally your first puppy’s groom will be an introductory “Tidy Up” groom only so they can ease into learning to be groomed. Unless your puppy is matted we suggest not doing the whole shebang at the first visit.
The puppy groom price of service is based on the unique requirements and characteristics of each pup and how long the groom takes. A puppy cannot be held down to get the job done quickly. This is distressing for the dog, unsafe, builds bad associations with grooming, and is completely against Zen Dog Grooming’s ethical values.
Remember that having your puppy calmly and kindly trained to be ok with grooming from a young age is an invaluable investment in the future happiness of your pup.
Our Grooming Service
At Zen Dog Grooming you are paying for a grooming service, not just a haircut. Every service will vary based on the dog breed, size, age, coat condition, type of groom, and importantly the dog’s behavioural traits. All of these factors determine the amount of time needed for the groom, and therefore the price of the groom.
Your groomer, Naomi, has a special interest in dog behaviour and will work with your dog to rectify, over time, any behavioural issues they may have during the grooming process.
As a behavioural, Certified Fear Free groomer, Naomi believes in training dogs to be good for grooming. Building positive associations with grooming using patience and kindness is the goal at Zen Dog Grooming. By keeping your dog calm, and helping them to build confidence, your dog will become relaxed and co-operative during the grooming process. They may even learn to love it, but at the very least we want them to be ok with it.
PLEASE read our SAFETY POLICY and TERMS & CONDITIONS before coming in before your appointment.
